Tissue layer: The inner lining of the uterus builds up under the influence of estrogens from the ovaries during the first half of the menstrual cycles, and under the influence of progesterone released from the ovary after ovulation transforms into a tissue layer suited to nurture a fertilized egg. If there is no pregnancy, this inner lining is shed during the menstrual period.
