Contributing factor: Martial arts can be very demanding on joints (I do taekwondo, MMA and brazilian juijitsu so I feel your pain!) If you are already at risk for osteoarthritis then the martial arts may make it worse. That being said, exercise and staying in shape is excellent for arthritis in general. See your doctor for evaluation and possible x-rays of the affected joints. Good luck! Kick on!

Any type of overuse: Any type of overuse, particularly with poor biomechanics or inappropriate training facilities can lead to arthritis. I teach martial arts and try to avoid high kicks, too much contact, and try to train on firm, but comfortable flooring. Training may change over time, and you will have to adapt to your bodies abilities at the time. Perhaps, a less impact intense art such as aikido is in order.
