May need to see doc: Typically, an umbilical hernia that becomes painful, swollen, or discolored needs to be evaluated right away. Just constipation doesn't necessarily mean it's related to the hernia. But, the hernia can get trapped and blood supply can get cut off, leading to infection and gangrene, which is why this is such a big deal. That can be life threatening. Surgery may be needed to avoid these complications
