A member asked:

I need help! how do i know if i have dissociative identity disorder if i voluntarily create another personality?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

DID is not voluntary: An essential feature of DID is that the personalities created are not voluntary. Often they are not even aware of each other, and the main conscious personality has no awareness or control of the others. DID is a controversial diagnosis, and there are some therapists who overdiagnose it because of their own personal beliefs. Others do not believe that it even exists. Often, those with DID have histories of extreme abuse. Find a therapist to accurately diagnose you, one who believes in the disorder, but is not over committed to finding it.
