After breastfeeding: Some women get their period back within a few months, some women don't get it for almost a year or more. If you are still breastfeeding you will likely not get your period until you stop or until you are feeding less frequently than every 5 hours or so, usually once your baby starts sleeping through the night.

Time to see your doc: If you see a doctor for heavy periods, they will want to make sure that you don't have any fibroids (usually benign tumors of the uterus) or polyps (growths of tissue from the uterine lining). If you have always had heavy periods, you may want to make sure you don't have a bleeding problem in general. Sometimes there is no definite cause, but knowing it isn't cancer is a must. Next, treat it.

How do I keep my period on track?

Good diet/exercise: Many things can make a period irregular. You should first take a pregnancy test and then see your doctor. Stress, diet, medications, exercise, etc can influence the timing of periods. Likewise, problems with your thyroid, obesity and disorders of the ovaries can also effect your cycles. Contact your doctor for appropriate tests/treatments.

Variable.: Everyone's pain tolerance is different. Here are some questions i ask to see if the cramping is normal. Are you able to go to work or school when you have your period? Do over-the-counter pain medications like midol or Motrin help your pain when taken at the recommended doses? If you answer no to either then your period cramping may be excessive.

Wait it out: Give your period time. Not every period is like the other and five it a few months of cycles to see how it "behaves". If continued problems, seek MD.
