Not a complete cover: The hymen usually does not completely cover the vaginal opening, allowing menstrual blood to escape. Some virginal women don't have any hymen at all. Surgery is sometimes needed if the hymen covers the opening all the way because the menstrual blood backs up and causes terrible pain. Fortunately this is rare. Best wishes!
