Irregular menses: What you are describing sounds like irregular menses and this can have many reasons. Depending on one's age and medical history there are some reasons more likely than others. Often hormonal changes may play a role. The best approach is to see a physician and go through a thorough evaluation and this should help with narrowing the cause and come up with appropriate treatment.

Hormonal imbalance: Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
