Not much: Both are highly addictive. Klonopin (clonazepam) may be slightly more likely to result in withdrawal seizures if stopped abruptly.

A 38-year-old member asked:
Are the side effects of klonopin similar to taking xanax (alprazolam)?

Dr. John Moranville answered

Yes and no: Xanax (alprazolam) is a very short acting benzodiazepine and Klonopin is longer acting. Xanax (alprazolam) is much more addictive if used long term, but may act quicker. Neither is good long term as you develop tolerance meaning the same dose is no longer effective. It is better to fo find an antidepressant or a wide variety of other anti anxiety medications.

A 39-year-old member asked:
What are the advantages of Xanax (alprazolam) over klonopin?
1 doctor answer • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Jane Steiner answered
Psychiatry 43 years experience
It works quicker: The advantage of xanax (alprazolam) is mainly that is gets into one's system pretty quickly, on the order of 15 to 30 minutes. It is useful if someone is experiencing a panic attack and needs a medication to get into their system quickly and work quickly. It doesn't last more than about 4 hours. However because it has such a short duration of action, it's not the best one for chronic, consistent anxiety.
