Irregular spotting: Irregular spotting/bleeding can result from many things. For women who consistently have irregular cycles, it usually means their lining did not shed completely and instead trickles out slowly. Anatomic reasons are also possible like polyps, fibroids, etc. Any hormonal medications (birth control pills) can change the menstrual pattern. If it persists then you need an evaluation by your doctor.
