Could you tell me what causes diabetes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: Hi. Different types of diabetes have different causes. Most common is type 2, caused by multiple defects involving insulin resistance & insulin production/secretion. Type 1 2nd most common; caused by autoimmune attack on insulin-producing cells in pancreas. Next is gestational, usually a precursor to type 2, but some type 1's show up this way. Uncommon causes are cystic fibrosis, genetic (MODY).
