A 45-year-old member asked:

can it be possible for you to ovulate without a period?

Occurs all the time: Ovulation always precedes the next menses normally. An example would be a post partum mom who is sexually active but not using contraception and gets pregnant without a period.

Yes.: I am guessing you mean after having a baby? An ovulation comes before the period, so it is possible that if your system is being 'reset, ' you could ovulate without knowing it. This makes contracption really critical if you are not wanting to get pregnant. Always assuming you can become pregnant will keep you safer!

Yes: You can keep track of basal body temperature, some women have a drop of half a degree at ovulation. It's not a great method, but it's cheap. You can also use an ovulation predictor kit. I don't usually recommend brand name products, but in this case, clear blue easy is reliable and easy to interpret. It measures hormone surges, when you get a smiley face you typically ovulate 24-36 hours later.

Multiple options: First you must figure out if there is any underlying cause for lack of ovulation. Treating thyroid or prolactin abnormalities may reverse the problem. Other options include pills (clomiphene, aromatase inhibitors) and injections of medications. All are commonly used in various different situations.
