Can you join the air force if you have a vp shunt?

I doubt it: I was a US Navy neurosurgeon for almost seven years. I seriously doubt you would be able to join the military with a vp shunt. The presence of a shunt implies an underlying condition, in this case shunt dependent hydrocephalus. If the shunt malfunctioned with you overseas, you might be in a world of hurt. You can probably have a military recruiter check on this for a definitive answer. Good luck.

Unlikely : You can speak to a recruiter to make sure, but I would doubt it. The primary reason is that a shunt malfunction requires emergent surgical treatment and the evaluation of a shunt requires advanced imaging modalities such as a CT scan. Good luck.
