Strained muscle: Strained muscles and rib pain are very common with a cough or a cold. You need to take Motrin 600 to 800 three times a day and use ice and warmth the the area that is most sore. Rotate the two and be sure you do it every hour. For example 20 mins ice or cold, 20 min warm compresses, 20 mins off. Good luck and feel better!

Yes....: Sometimes a coughing spasm can cause your ribs to hurt. I would take some Ibuprofen 400 mg twice a day and see your doctor in a few days. Drink lots of water with this.
