Work It Out ...: Fecal impactions after surgery or any abdominal disease is a common problem. The problem escalates with age. Gentle tap water enemas with generous anal lubrication will usually work. Cathartics, drugs to cause a movement, are usually unhelpful with an impaction but there is no harm in adding them to the mix. Milk of Magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) or preparations like that are fine.
