A member asked:

My 4 week old has been in pain today (and yesterday) trying to poop. it took time and lots of help for him to push out the poop. what can cause this?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Normal : Usually straining while pooping, pushing hard is normal phenomenon in the first few months of life. Babies have to learn to relax the muscles at anus to get the poop out which may take time. As long as the stool/poop comes out soft, he is not constipated. If stools are hard like small pebbles/balls then he is constipated. It can be treated with 1 to 2 oz of prune juice.
