Safe sex: When used properly condoms have a 2% failure rate for preventing pregnancy. In careless hands, condoms can have an 18% failure rate. The rates of protection from sexually transmitted diseases is about the same. So used properly, condoms are very safe, but not perfect. Any time you have sex, there is some risk associated with it. Adding a diaphragm or the pill will further reduce pregnancy risk.
