A member asked:

How harmful is it to consume licorice during the first trimester of pregnancy? has it ever leads to neural tube defects? thank you.

Safe: I'm not aware of any reason to believe that licorice causes neural tube defects. Anyone can allege anything. Eating a lot of black licorice can raise blood pressure, and hopefully you're being monitored. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
