A member asked:

Does a child have much stomach acid, or only after a certain age?

Stomach acid: All babies are born with active stomach glands that produce acid called gastric juice. This helps in digesting formula and breast milk. When a baby regurgitates curdled milk with a sour odor, that's the stomach acid doing its work to digest the food.

Starts after birth: With the evidence we have, it appears that the stomach glands are inactive until birth, and begin secreting acid as soon as feeding starts.Proper digestion requires that the stomach contents reach a certain degree of acidity for the digestive enzymes to function properly.Since babies grow quickly after birth, the process is adequate for this need.
