Sexual transmission: Herpes virus transmits via direct contact. You partner may also have had oral herpes that was transmitted to you via oral sex. There really is no other way to contract genital herpes--other than direct contact of someone who has lesions with your skin. However, when you are having a remission and have no ulcers you will not pass herpes to your partner.
