No: Although asthma is a common cause for coughing, coughing is absent in likely more than 30% of the patients I have seen. Shortness of breath and wheezing are the other two commonest symptoms.

Often, not always: cough is usually present, as excess mucus from inflammation is a problem. But some predominantly wheeze. Some cough exclusively (cough asthma). But - don't rule out asthma because cough is not present. Get checked, and be sure to perform spirometry befor and after a bronchodilator medication.

Not always : Typical symptoms of asthma include cough , wheezing, tight chest and shortness of breath but in saying that every one doesn't have typical symptoms and people can have asthma with just wheezing and shortness of breath.
