Tonsillectomy: It depends on the reason. If you are having Chronic tonsillitis or more than 3 episodes of acute tonsillitis per year fro 2-3 years, also if you are getting painful tonsil stones as well as airway oropharyngeal obstruction due to enlarged tonsills leading to swallowing or breathing problems. Your ENT will evaluate you for tonsillectomy indications.

4 possible reasons: There are 4 reasons that palatine (throat) tonsils may be ethically removed. 1.) a minimum of 3 documented episodes of acute suppurative (pussy) tonsillitis annually. 2.) extreme enlargement of the tonsils resulting in a sleep disorder. 3.) foul odor to the breath resulting from food particles getting caught in the tonsillar crypts. 4.) the complication of a peritonsillar abscess.

Tonsils out?: There are many reasons for removal of the tonsils -- recurrent tonsillits, usually at least six episodes in the last year or four episodes in the past six months; one tonsil larger than the other; large tonsils causing airway obstruction -- snoring or sleep apnea; peritonsillar abscess; and a seldom seen diphtheria carrier.
