A member asked:

Help please! when someone is an alcoholic do they usually have another underlining mental illness as well?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not necessarily: About a quarter of people with alcoholism have underlying depression, about 10% also have anxiety disorders, and about 5% may have bipolar disorder. People who didn't start out with a problem may develop mental health issues BECAUSE of their drinking as well. All in all, about half to 2/3 of people with alcohol problems have other psychological issues.
