Treatment: It's mostly supportive, but a drug called Riluzole is approved for ALS and it's thought to work by decreasing glutamate mediated motor neuron cell death.

Riluzole only: The only medicine, so far, seeming to affect the disease is Riluzole and this does delay the need for tracheostomy, but does not improve strength or quality of life. Granted there are additional medications for complications and palliation, but these are not specific for als.
