A member asked:

Why would an ostomy bag be put in for ischemic bowel?

For patient safety: Ischemic bowel means the blood flow to the bowel is decreased enough to cause symptoms; in this case, surgery was needed to remove affected bowel. Reconnecting the bowel was considered too risky by the surgeon, who placed a stoma for the patient's safety. The patient's recuperation and general medical status will affect whether the stoma can be closed or will be permanent.

Emergent surgery: If your surgery was emergent and bowel required removal because of ischemia (inadequate or no blood flow to bowel) then your bowel could not be pre cleaned of stool and bacteria and an ostomy was created temporarily in most cases.
