Depends: If you got to the GI doc on referral from your family doc, then the GI doc has a specific problem to assess and sometimes that might require surgery so you would be referred to a general surgeon. However GI docs are fully trained internists and in the process of checking out your GI problem, might discover something else which would require alternate specialist like cardioliologists.
