Usually none: All babies are born with pfo. It is a normal finding in up to 25% of the adult population. Most people never have symptoms. However, pfo has been associated to stroke, migraine headaches, and decompression illness in scuba divers in some patients. We close pfo's in people who have problems. This can be done as an outpatient through a heart catheterization via a tiny incision in the groin.
