Depo is effective: The Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) injection is extremely effective and, yes, it works with the first injection. If given within the first 7 days after your period starts, you are protected from pregnancy immediately. It is never safe to have "unsafe" sex as you should always protect against sexually transmitted infections with barrier protection, such as latex or female condoms.
