Dyspnea...: In an asthmatic, an allergen stimulates the inflammatory cascade as well as inducing bronchospasm by smooth muscle contraction. The bronchospasm and airway inflammation makes air exchange difficult leading to shortness of breath or dyspnea. Bronchodilator inhalers relieve bronchospasm while steroid inhalers treat airway inflammation.
