I have friends that had a full blown period while pregnant. how is that possible and how common is it?

Not common: What they may refer to as period, is not a true period if they are pregnant. Some may think they are pregnant, while they are not (symptoms may be present but the test is negative). While other are truly pregnant, but their bleeding is not a true period but may be implantation bleeding or some other cause.
