I was swimming in a river and accidently swallowed some water, am i risk for giardiasis?

Yes: Giardia lives in freshwater streams and has been reported in colorado. However, giardia is not present in every river. Signs of giardiasis included bloating and diarrhea. It can be tested in stool samples and when the diagnosis is in doubt endoscopy can be performed. Giardia if present can be treated with antibiotics.

Yes: Yes, you are at some risk as mountain streams are a source for giardiasis. Acute symptoms would arise fairly quickly after such an exposure.

Yes: When one swallows water that is infected with giardia, one is at risk for developing giardiasis. Giardia is a parasite that lives in the intestines of infected humans and animals. When human or animal fecal waste comes in contact with fresh water streams, rivers and lakes, these bodies of water can become "infected" with this parasite. Should you suspect giardiasis, seek the help of your doctor.

Usually not: Just because you swam somewhere doesn't mean you will get giardia. It is a parasite and is acquired by swallowing it (contaminated food or water). The symptoms ate gas, cramping pain, and on and off diarrhea.
