Washing too much?: If you are obsessing about dirty nails you may have extreme exposure to dirt or you may be obsessive compulsive. If your family agree that your nails are excessively dirty than get a nail brush. But if others say you need to quit thinking about your nails you need a psychiatrist. It is a form of anxiety and the doctor can help you.

Rough dirty nails: The roughness more then the brittleness of the nails is probably why they are collecting dirt. Ensure that you are getting adequate protein in your diet, and eat gelatin to help thicken your nails. In the short run, use a thick lotion or petrolatum on your fingertips to fill in the gaps and prevent accumulation of dirt prior to working in soiled environments.
