A 21-year-old member asked:

will chlorinating my water decrease my chances of getting parasites?

Not likely: The two common water borne parasites in the US, giardia and cryptosporidium are not susceptible to usual chlorination. Filtration with very narrow pore filters and sand filtration at water treatment plants may help.

Yes, from the water: Chlorine will kill parasites in the chlorinated water itself. You cannot drink chlorinated water and then get protection from drinking non chlorinated water from other sources.

Tap water is fine: Unless you live in a rural area, use well water or don't like or trust your local water supply, tap water is fine and boiling is usually not necessary. Nursery water is also an unnecessary expense.

Use Nursery water: Nursery water is distilled water that is also fortified with a small amount of Fluoride (you can also get Fluoride free variety). This water is purified for drinking by babies and does not contain harmful bacteria, parasites, or heavy metals that can be found in city/tap or well water. Should be used until age 12 months.

A 24-year-old female asked:

Is the brand name water, vitamin water really a healthy choice? One of the ingredients is reverse osmosis water, what s that? Do doctors advice against it?

It's all relative: Most of the vitamin waters contain 32 grams (6+ tsp) of sugar; any drink with that much sugar is not particularly healthy. But it does have small amounts of vitamins (mostly vit c & some b's). Reverse osmosis is a good form of water purification. Compared to a soda, that has over twice as much sugar & no vitamins, it is a healthy choice, but compared to pure water & a vitamin pill not so good!

The vitamin water I like most is XXX because of the healthy antioxidants from fruits that are added. Overall though, the healthiest drink is water, but I advise avoiding fluoridated water, which is tricky because over 70% of our country's water supply is fluoridated! Reverse osmosis does remove fluoride from water so at least Vitamin Water is free of fluoride. Spring water is another source of fluoride-free water. Instead of "Vitamin Water" you can try adding a packet of EmergenC (or similar products like OxyLent) to spring water. This will give a much higher levels of vitamins and much less sugar (6 grams), has a variety of nice fruit flavors and costs much less.
