What is abosulte neutropenia and relative eosinophilia?

See below: When the neutrophil count is less than 1.2 k/ul it is absolute neutropenia and the person is at risk for infections. Eosinophils are 2-3% of the total white blood cells, however, if the total white blood cell count is low eosinophil content appear to be increased, i.e., relative increase or relative eosinophilia. This is not significant, but the low white blood cell count may be serious.

Neutropenia is....: Defined as an absolute neutrophil count (anc) less than 1500. From there it is subdivided into mild (1000-1500), moderate (500-1000) and severe (<500). Folks with severe neutropenia are at increased risk for bacterial infections. Mild to moderate, less so. Eosinophils are another type of granulocyte. They play a role in combating parasitic infections. They are ~1-3% of wbcs.
