Secondary gains: I'm guessing that misery might provide secondary gains - sympathy, attention, excuses. You can block some of these by asking people to deny you them. Some won't be able to resist, but it will cut into the effect anyway. Without those nice things - misery will be more miserable and much easier to quit. You'll have yto learn new things too. That may not be easy, but it is possible and might be fun.
