'Was' is important!: If the individual is clean and sober of all substances, and you feel you can trust this, good. Be sure he has been tested for hiv, hepatitis b and c - as these infections can be contracted through drug injection into the vein. These can be passed by sexual contact. Sobriety is attainable - with hard work and life changes. Many former drug users have gone on to be good parents! just be safe.

Hard to say: If you get past the social/behavioral issues of addiction, there is hope. There is no guarantee that any man can father kids, but the effect of prior drug use has less effect on men than women. Sperm are continuously generated from stem cells where past drug use has little effect.Healthier sperm swim better and are more available for conception. So there is not as much wory about birth defects.
