What are the tactics of someone with the denial defense mechanism?

Denial when employed as a defense mechanism is putting an insight or event out of one's awareness because it is too painful. Psychological coping is accomplished in this way. An example to illustrate, a widow who recently lost her husband continues to set a place for him at the table every night, and expects him to walk through the door at the usual time in the evening.
