A member asked:

If someone has a paradoxical reaction to a benzodiazepine, is there usually some sort of underlying cause like a behavioral disorder?

Paradoxical: Paradoxical reactions to benzodiazepenes are uncommon and are more common in children and elderly people as wellas alcoholics. Some people are genetically predisposed. It is felt that this group's body handles the drug differently.

No: Like any other paradoxical reaction, it can just happen. It is seen more commonly in children and individuals with developmental delays, like autism or mental retardation, but it can really happen to anyone. It is like drinking alcohol: you can have a happy calm experience or a bad, angry experience. It depends on the individual and the situation.
