Avoid trauma: Subdural hematomas are common after trauma such as falls or blows to the head especially in those on blood thinners. They may not need surgery if small and not associated with symptoms. For patients with headaches, weakness, or poor activity level, surgery can be used to drain or evacuate the hematoma with good results in most cases. Avoiding future trauma and stopping blood thinners helps.
