Autoimmune disorder: Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder. That means that your body gets confused, and the process that normally kills disease causing organisms like bacteria and viruses (your immune system) attacks the cells in your body that produce the color in your skin (called melanocytes). When those cells die, you get patches of skin that are white. The disorder is likely at least partially genetic.
