Usually a ct is done: Acutely, or in the first 24 hours to rule out a bleed and see larger strokes. After the acute diagnostic phase, an MRI may be done to see smaller strokes or level and/or progression of damage if it was an ischemic stroke.

MRI: Both studies are commonly used in the early evaluation of stroke. A ct can rule out a hemorrhagic stroke quickly in the er. A MRI is more sensitive for a ischemic stroke but takes longer to perform.
