Normal: Blood thickens and darkens, and is generally normal. However, if you are seeing a significant difference in your period all of a sudden, you should see your doctor. Be well.

Is it normal to have menstrual symptoms without the bleeding from a period?

Yes: Ruling out pregnancy first, the "menstrual symptoms" are due to the drop of hormones effect at the end of the cycle. If the endometrium(lining of the womb) is minimal in length, than very little or no menstrual bleeding occurs. This is common in low dose contraceptive pills as away to prevent accidental implantation and the bleeding may be only "spoting" or a brown 1-2 day discharge.

Hi. So last saturday i stared bleeding. This is highly unusual for me since I have never spotted between my menstrual cycles. What might be wrong?

Multiple causes: Mid cycle spotting can be due to numerous causes. Some are pregnancy, hormonal changes that effect the lining of the uterus, polyps, fibroids. If you aren't pregnant and not having abdominal pain then you shouldn't worry and see what happens next month.

A 26-year-old female asked:

Very dark almost black menstural bleeding... Concern?

Dr. Vernon Barton
General Practice 52 years experience
Probably not: The color of blood in menstruation darkens when the loss of blood is slow or exposed to oxygen for a longer period of time. You may be able to prove this with any fresh blood from a cut, nosebleed etc that is allowed to sit for a little while. It will darken with time. Vaginal ph and bacteria add to the change in color also.

Varies: Spotting at the time of ovulation is common and normal. Irregular bleeding between cycles usually means there is some sort of problem - infection, polyps, fibroids, endometriosis, and cancer are all possibilities.
