A 16-year-old female asked:

What are the symptoms of a latex condom allergic reaction/allergy and how should it be treated?

Localized: Most commonly, latex allergies are localized to where the latex touches your skin, so in the case of a condom, your penis would become inflamed, possible swelling, red, possibly itchy, and may get bumps from the local reaction. In sever cases, your whole body could have a reaction and you could get short of breath, etc. Local tx for first, emergent for the serious reaction. Best wishes.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine): Cream, spray, or oral pills. If severe, see your doctor. Use nitrile condoms next time (but please always use a condom).

What happens if you don't treat a latex condom allergic reaction?

Latex condom allergy: The original allergic reaction can last a lot longer without treatment. Any further exposure to latex or latex condom becomes more severe with each successive exposure. It is wise to see an allergist about the latex allergy for future prevention.
