Testing: If you have brown phlegm, it may be related to an infection and/or mild bleeding. Your physician may order a chest x ray, TB test and send the phlegm for cultures and also rule out a malignancy. If you smoke or are exposed to smoke, it is important to avoid smoke.

More information: do you have night sweat, weight loss, exposure to any sick people, fever? Brownish sputum is concerning for blood, so watch out for that although most of the time it just means concenterated and dehydrated sputum. if you have above symptoms or not getting better in 1-2 wks see a doctor.
