Risks: Risks of std infection would depend on the nature of sexual contact (vaginal, oral or anal intercourse), the number of sexual partners one has, and any history of past or current std infections.

Depends on behaviors: Transgender people can certainly get STDs. In fact, transwomen (male-to-female) have a very high rate of HIV infection, compared to the general population. This is likely due to a variety of factors - but not due simply to being transgender! Always, always use protection (latex condoms or dental dams) depending on what your sexual patterns are! Get tested, if in doubt.

Social Rejection: Identifying as trans* doesn't increase risk of getting an std, per se. But b/c ppl who r trans* r often marginalized owing 2 prejudices ; misconceptions, many suffer physically, emotionally, economically. Those who lack access 2 housing, nutrition, healthcare, etc. Are a much higher risk 4 stds than the general population. 1 in 5 trans* persons will have experienced homelessness in their lifetime.

Expect the same risk: ANY sexually active person is at risk for getting or giving an STD. Always use latex protection (if non-allergic) when body fluids are exchanged. There may be an increased risk in people who, because of severe poverty, are doing "sex work" to support themselves. But this is a minority of TG individuals. Bottom line? Protect yourself and your partner. LGromkoMD
