Common: Many of my patients who received rai therapy for hyperthyroidism developed hypothyroidism within months or years after their treatment and had to take thyroid replacement therapy. Up to 50% of treated patients develop hypothyroidism within 1 year. The good news is that most patients do well on replacement therapy.
