See answer: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (pcnl) is a surgical procedure to remove stones from the kidney by a small puncture wound (up to about 1 cm) through the flank/back. It is most suitable to remove larger stones of more than 2 cm in size. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (eswl), which is an outpatient, non-invasive "blasting" of stones, is generally used for treating smaller stones.
