'fight or flight': Humans have built-in emergency responses to help us survive life-threatening situations. A combination of stress hormones (epinephrine [aka adrenalin], cortisol, etc) & high sympathetic (autonomic) nervous system output results in increased pulse & bp, shunting of blood toward the vital organs, faster reaction times etc. Unhelpfully, we react to stress this way too, which wears out our bodies.
