Herpes: There are two herpes viruses. Most people who get cold sores have herpes type one or herpes simplex. 75% of americans have this infection and most got it as children from other family members. Herpes type two used to be called 'genital' herpes and is thought to be the std virus. But, the confusing part of the story is that either virus can be transmitted to an uninfected individual during sex.
