How harmful is infective endocarditis?

Potentially fatal: Infectious (bacterial) endocarditis is typically fatal without treatment, and occasionally fatal even with appropriate treatment. Typically, six weeks of IV antibiotics are required. Sometimes, the heart is damaged and requires surgical repair, and sometimes, the infection can not be cleared from the heart without surgery (abscess).
