Pseudoephedrine: Decongestants work best for nasal congestion, and there is only one over the counter medication that works well for this problem, and that is pseudoephedrine. This medication is only available by asking the pharmacist. Nasal steroid sprays are the most effective medication for childhood allergies, in children over the age of 2, when medications are needed on a regular basis.
